Liverpool midfielder to be SACRIFICED as part of transfer overhaul

Liverpool can be pretty pleased with their summer transfer business so far. Despite winning the 2024/25 Premier League title, Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes are not standing still.

The Reds have already announced the signings of Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez. Another Hungarian, goalkeeper Armin Pecsi, has also been acquired although he will be one for the future.

Meanwhile, Giorgi Mamardashvili will also be coming through the door - one year after his transfer from Valencia was confirmed. That outlay hasn’t come cheap.

Wirtz could end up costing £116m if all bonuses and add-ons are met. Frimpong cost a reasonable £29.5m after his release clause was activated - roughly the same as Mamardashvili - while Kerkez comes on board for a fee reported at £45m.

If any more signings are to be made, it looks like Liverpool are going to have to conduct some outgoing business first.

Liverpool's clearout could include fringe players

Big names such as Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz could end up following Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher out of the exit door. But Hughes does have an opportunity to earn money on fringe talent too.

Jarell Quansah looks set to bring in a massive £30m once his deal to Leverkusen goes through. Harvey Elliott may well end up at Wolves or Brighton with the club asking for between £40m and £50m.

Don’t forget Ben Doak - the Scotland winger who was linked with Crystal Palace in January. If he moves then Liverpool can be assured of another £25m or so.

That leaves a pretty penny in the transfer fund should the Reds opt for a new striker or else a centre-back.

Factor in the potential departure of Tyler Morton and the potential to spend later in the window swells even further.

Tyler Morton's uncertain situation

Morton, 22, is currently preparing for a European Under-21 Championship final against Germany alongside Quansah and Elliott. But the midfielder’s future is very much under scrutiny.

The academy graduate was tipped for a first-team breakthrough last season but it never quite happened - with Morton later suffering a season-ending injury.

Liverpool are reported to have turned down bids worth around £20m for Morton last summer with Middlesbrough offering around half that in January.

Under contract until 2028, it looks like Morton will be on his way if a reasonable offer is made.

West Ham want Tyler Morton

And now a report from The West Ham Way suggests that Graham Potter’s side are now in the mix. Seeking to reduce the average age of the squad - as well as cash in on senior players - the Hammers are now reported to be seeking a deal for Morton.

The East London club are watching Morton during the Euros - and could formalise their interest once the tournament ends.

It would be a shame to lose Morton, who has got Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo ahead of him in the Anfield pecking order. But at this stage of his career he needs games - and Liverpool’s transfer business over the rest of the summer demands sacrifices.
