Liverpool Transfer News: John Stones Agrees Inter Move as Centre-Back Search Intensifies

Liverpool’s search for defensive reinforcement has taken another turn, with John Stones now closing in on a move to Inter Milan after reaching a verbal agreement over a free transfer.

The England international had been under consideration at Anfield as Liverpool assessed options in the centre-back market. He was reportedly viewed as an attractive opportunity following the expiry of his Manchester City contract, particularly given the chance to add proven Premier League and international experience without a transfer fee.

That possibility now appears to have slipped away. Inter have moved quickly, and the expectation is that Stones will formalise a two-year deal in the coming days, as reported by Sky Sports.

Inter move closes door on Liverpool option

Stones had generated interest from several leading clubs, with Arsenal and Chelsea also understood to have tracked the situation. Inter, aware of that competition, accelerated discussions and now look set to secure the 32-year-old.

For Liverpool, the situation is more about what might have been than a deal that was ever close. Stones was part of the thinking rather than an advanced pursuit, but that does not lessen the significance of losing an option who would have brought immediate authority to Andoni Iraola’s back line.

There has long been admiration for Stones’ quality, and one description of him as a “class act” who would “tick so many boxes” captures why his availability on a free transfer had appeal. Even with age and fitness considerations, his pedigree, composure in possession and tactical intelligence made him a compelling short-term solution.

Centre-back concerns remain for Iraola

The timing sharpens focus on Liverpool’s current need at centre-back. Joe Gomez’s early withdrawal in the weekend win over Sunderland exposed how stretched the position has become, leaving Iraola short of senior options because of injuries and players still absent after the World Cup break.

Virgil van Dijk’s return to the AXA Training Centre has brought some reassurance, while Gomez and Jeremy Jacquet are believed to be dealing with only minor problems. Giovanni Leoni is also part of the wider picture. Even so, the broader view inside the market is that Liverpool would still benefit from adding one more centre-back before the window closes.

That is why missing out on Stones may sting. A player of his experience, available without a fee, could have offered both cover and leadership during a period when squad depth is under scrutiny.

Wages, age and value in transfer market

Any move would have required serious financial consideration. Stones had been earning around £250,000 per week at Manchester City, and salary levels of that size always influence the feasibility of a deal, even when no transfer fee is involved.

Yet there was a persuasive case that a two-year arrangement could have represented strong value in the current market. Liverpool’s recruitment team now face a familiar challenge, identifying whether to pursue another experienced option or press ahead with a younger target who offers a longer-term solution.

What is clear is that Liverpool must move decisively. The centre-back position already looked like an area requiring attention, and recent availability issues have only reinforced that view. With five weeks of the transfer window remaining, attention will now switch to alternative targets.

Stones appears headed for Serie A, and Liverpool are left to continue their search. Whether that next move brings an established defender or a rising talent, the priority has become increasingly obvious, Iraola needs another centre-back.
