Liverpool have moved to the front of the queue for Kaishu Sano and are prepared to pay up to €60m (£51m) for the Mainz midfielder.
The Reds have held talks over a deal, positioning themselves ahead of a strong field of rivals. A successful bid would represent a record sale for the Bundesliga club.
They face plenty of competition, though. TEAMtalk reports that Arsenal, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund have all been in contact with Sano’s representatives, while Newcastle are also admirers. Brentford and Brighton held interest earlier in the window.
The 25-year-old’s stock has risen sharply this year. A defensive midfielder known for his tireless work rate and ball-winning, Sano impressed throughout the Bundesliga season before starring for Japan at the World Cup.
His tournament performances caught the eye. Sano played in all but one of Japan’s matches, scoring in the round-of-32 defeat to Brazil and providing an assist against Tunisia in the group stage. He capped a genuine international breakthrough.
His club numbers underline his consistency. Sano made 48 appearances across all competitions for Mainz last season, contributing two goals and five assists from a deep-lying role.
Mainz are prepared to cash in for the right price. The German club value him at close to €60m and are determined to hold firm, anticipating offers this summer. Sano, who joined from Kashima Antlers in 2024, is under contract until 2028.
The player’s own preference may prove decisive. Sano is understood to be keen on testing himself in the Premier League, a factor that could hand Liverpool an edge in the race.
Andoni Iraola is reshaping his midfield at Anfield, with Sano viewed as a strong fit. The Reds appear best placed to sign him, though the level of interest means any deal would need to be concluded quickly.
