With Liverpool preparing for their showdown against Man United after the international break, there is growing confidence that Ibrahima Konate will be available for selection. Early fears of a serious setback have eased, offering Arne Slot a crucial lift at a time when defensive options are stretched.
The concern arose during Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Konate was substituted early in the second half, visibly uncomfortable as he left the pitch. Slot explained the decision in typically pragmatic fashion, saying: “I don’t know if it is a big injury, but what I do know is he limped a little bit and when I asked him he said he felt his quad a little bit.
“Then, for me, all alarm bells go off because in another sprint you never know if that is going to go good.
“It was also already a substitution I had in mind, maybe for a few minutes or a little bit later, because the right centre-back had a lot of ball possession and we needed to create from that position.
“We all know Ryan [Gravenberch] is quite good in that.
“It might be OK that he went off early enough but it was clear I had to take him off because he was limping.”
Initial reactions suggested another unwelcome injury twist for Liverpool, especially with Giovanni Leoni already ruled out for up to a year with an ACL tear. However, optimism has since grown.

Le Parisien report that Konate is expected to undergo further medical checks upon his arrival at the camp, which was yesterday, although the publication states that the issue is not considered serious ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Iceland.
For Liverpool, the timing could not be better. Slot’s side welcome Man United to Anfield in what is shaping up to be a pivotal Premier League encounter. Losing Konate would have forced a reshuffle in a department that already lacks depth. Instead, it now appears the French international may suffer no more than a brief scare.
Slot has built much of Liverpool’s defensive stability on physicality and control from the back line, and Konate is central to that approach. Even if the club proceed with caution, his likely availability restores balance to preparations. Liverpool cannot afford turbulence against Man United, particularly after surrendering top spot against Chelsea.
With Konate now back among his French team-mates, both club and country will monitor his progress closely. For Liverpool supporters, the news is simple. Their key defender looks on course to feature when it matters most.
