Liverpool have signed Martha Thomas on loan from Tottenham Hotspur and Denise O’Sullivan on a permanent transfer.
Midfielder O’Sullivan announced on Saturday that she was leaving North Carolina Courage after nine years in the USA, ready for what she described on social media as “a new challenge”.
She later spoke to the club’s official website and said that she wanted to give the benefit of her experience to the Reds’ young squad as they look to get themselves off the bottom of the Women’s Super League table.
“I want to help this team and it’s important to get results and that’s what I’m here for, to have an impact,” she was quoted as saying.
“I want to come in and have an impact from the first minute and get going with the team. I am a natural leader, I want to lead by example and lead with humility as well, bring everyone up around me and that’s what I’m here to do.”
For her part, striker Thomas told the club’s official website: “I think they are a really ambitious club and I think it’s the right fit, right now in my career.
“Even though it’s a short loan, I’m really looking forward to be here and help this team climb the table where they deserve to be.”
Liverpool appointed Gareth Taylor as their new head coach last summer. Since then, they have not won a game in the WSL. They are currently bottom of the table with four points from their 12 matches.
They face fourth-tier side London Bees in the fourth round of the Women’s FA Cup on Sunday, 18th January.
Ireland international O’Sullivan has 130 caps for her country. She has also represented Houston Dash in the NWSL as well as Glasgow City in Scotland, and Peamount United and Cork City in her homeland.
Arriving at Spurs in September 2023 from Manchester United, Thomas scored 10 goals in that season – including the winner in a Women’s FA Cup semi-final against Leicester City.
On the international stage, she has earned 52 caps for Scotland to date, scoring 21 goals.
