Liverpool Struggles Put Spotlight on Cody Gakpo Form

Liverpool’s title defence has unravelled into a frustrating campaign, and individual performances have come under increasing scrutiny. One name repeatedly mentioned is Cody Gakpo, whose dip in form has mirrored the wider struggles at Anfield. With Arne Slot under pressure and Liverpool sitting fifth, questions around consistency and selection have become impossible to ignore.

The departure of Luis Diaz last summer reshaped the attacking hierarchy, leaving Gakpo as the leading option on the left. What initially looked like a chance to cement his place has instead turned into a prolonged spell of underwhelming output.

Paul Gorst Raises Concerns Over Confidence and Complacency

In a recent Q and A for The Liverpool Echo, Paul Gorst did not hold back in his assessment of Cody Gakpo’s season.

He said, ‘Cody Gakpo has had a desperately poor season and looks so short of confidence and belief, but you also have to question if the Netherlands winger became complacent due to the lack of competition for a spot on that left side of the attack?

‘Only Rio Ngumoha is a serious option for that position and having a relatively untried 17-year-old as your main deputy might naturally lead to that sort of complacency setting in.’

It is a strong viewpoint, but one that reflects a growing sentiment among Liverpool observers. When competition drops, standards can follow, and that appears to be part of the issue here.

Liverpool Selection Dilemma on Left Flank

Liverpool’s attacking balance has lacked sharpness, and Cody Gakpo’s numbers underline the problem. Eight goals in his last 42 appearances is not the return expected from a regular starter at a club with title ambitions.

Meanwhile, the emergence of Rio Ngumoha has added intrigue. His pace and directness offer something different, prompting calls for increased involvement. Gorst acknowledged this shift, stating, ‘As the campaign has wore on, it’s become clear that Ngumoha would provide an extra injection of speed and trickery that Gakpo simply hasn’t been able to this season.

‘I’d expect a few more outings for Ngumoha between now and the end of the season but Liverpool need to be careful not to overburden someone who doesn’t turn 18 until the end of August.’

For Liverpool, it is a balancing act. Youthful energy can lift a side, but relying too heavily on inexperience carries its own risks.

Cody Gakpo Must Respond to Liverpool Pressure

There is a distinction to be made between effort and execution. Few would question Cody Gakpo’s commitment, yet his performances suggest a player struggling with confidence and predictability. Defenders have found him easier to manage, and his influence in games has faded.

Since the 2-2 draw at Fulham in January, where he thought he had secured a late winner, his Premier League return has been modest. One goal since then, against West Ham, tells its own story.

Liverpool’s current situation demands more. Competition has re emerged, and places in the starting XI can no longer be taken for granted. Gakpo’s response in the closing weeks of the season will be crucial, not just for his own standing, but for Liverpool’s hopes of salvaging something from a difficult year.

There is still time for a strong finish, and players of his quality have shown they can catch fire quickly. Liverpool will need that now more than ever.
