Just hours after the passing of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, Liverpool has made a historic decision. The player's number will forever be immortalized.
Liverpool has been in shock since Thursday morning following the announcement of Diogo Jota's death. The Portuguese winger lost his life in a car accident alongside his brother during the night as they were driving on a Spanish road.
Since then, tributes have poured in from across the football world, while the Reds prepare a special ceremony and look to honor his memory. In a statement released this evening, the club announced that the number 20 will be immortalized.
"Number 20 will be immortalized for his contributions as a member of the Liverpool squad that clinched the 2024/25 title—the club’s 20th—thanks to his trademark dribbling and finishing in front of the Kop to seal victory in the Merseyside derby last April," the club wrote.
That goal also proved to be the final one scored by the player, who passed away at the age of 28.
