These are difficult days for Arne Slot.

The Liverpool head coach was appointed as part of the club’s post-Jurgen Klopp restructure in 2024. And the Dutchman got off to the best possible start - winning the Premier League title at the first time of asking.

Following on from a record-breaking £450m transfer spend it was expected that the Anfield side would get even better. But this season has derailed badly - with injuries and a lack of consistent playing identity condemning Slot to a washout campaign.

It’s been speculated that the FSG hierarchy could make a change - either before the end of the season or else in summer. Although Slot has a year left to run on his deal the decision-makers at Anfield could opt for a new manager.

Luis Enrique named as ideal Slot successor

And one of the names in the frame to replace Slot is that of the man who beat his team on Wednesday night.

Luis Enrique - a treble winner with both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain - orchestrated a comfortable 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win against the Reds in midweek.

The Spaniard, 55, is valued as one of the best coaches in the game but owing to a contract which expires in 2027 his future at PSG is somewhat in doubt.

And now Football Transfers is reporting that Luis Enrique is being lined up for a move to Real Madrid as a replacement for Alvaro Arbeloa.

Real Madrid seeking Luis Enrique appointment

“Real Madrid want to appoint Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique as their next permanent head coach,” the report reads.

“Real Madrid refused to confirm whether Arbeloa was appointed as a permanent manager or in an interim capacity, but it’s believed that a review of his position will take place after the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.

“Despite his ties to Barcelona, we have been informed that Real Madrid have earmarked him as a top target for the head coach role, and we understand that PSG have identified the aforementioned Alonso as a potential replacement if Enrique opts to leave the Parc des Princes this summer.”

LFC will lose out on Luis Enrique

So this could well be a double blow for Liverpool as they wrestle with the idea of replacing Arne Slot.

Luis Enrique is top of a lot of people’s lists to replace the 47-year-old and losing him to Madrid would be a blow if FSG are currently thinking the same way.

And should PSG lose their beloved head coach then Alonso too could be on the move to the Parc des Princes. It’s coming to crunch time over a decision on Slot’s future - and sooner or later Richard Hughes will be facing down an incredibly difficult call.
