Could Liverpool Replace Arne Slot with Premier League Boss?

On ‘Molby On The Spot’ for Anfield Index, Trev Downey and Jan Molby turned towards one of the most intriguing Liverpool questions of the summer, could AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola replace Arne Slot?

With Slot under serious pressure after a disastrous title defence, Liverpool sitting fifth and set to just scrape Champions League football, the appeal of Iraola is obvious. Bournemouth are sixth, have secured European football for the first time in their history, and Iraola’s work has made him one of the most discussed coaches in the Premier League.

Molby was clearly impressed. Speaking to Downey, he said: “This boy is special.” He added: “I cannot for my life work out how he’s decided to leave Bournemouth with the squad. This is the best squad they’ve ever had.”

That matters because Liverpool’s frustration with Arne Slot is not simply about league position. It is about direction, energy and identity. Molby had already questioned whether Slot would really change, saying: “I think the thing in terms of Arne Slot changing the way he wants to play, I think that ship sailed.”

By contrast, Iraola was presented as a coach with clarity. Molby said he “knows exactly what he wants” and “knows exactly how to get it”. For a Liverpool side accused of looking disjointed and passive, that kind of conviction feels attractive.

The strongest line came when Molby admitted: “I wouldn’t mind seeing him at Anfield.” He then added: “If it comes off the football will be spectacular.”

That is the heart of the Iraola debate. Liverpool supporters want a team that plays with tempo, structure and purpose. Iraola’s Bournemouth have offered enough of that to make the idea feel plausible, even exciting.

There is caution, though. Molby noted that Bournemouth may play around 40 games, while Liverpool could be looking at “55 or maybe even more”. He also warned: “There’s also that chance that it might be a step too far.”

Downey put it in similar terms, saying it “feels a bit like a punt” and “rolling a dice to an extent”.

So, could Andoni Iraola replace Arne Slot at Liverpool? Based on the Anfield Index discussion, he is a compelling candidate, but not a risk free one. The attraction is the football. The concern is the scale. For Liverpool, that may be the summer’s defining calculation.
