Derby record: Mohamed Salah has scored eight goals against Everton

Liverpool turn their attention back to the Premier League with the small matter of a Merseyside derby against Everton tonight. It is nearly a month since the Reds were last in league action, with Arne Slot’s suffering painful defeats to PSG and Newcastle since then to end their hopes of Champions League and Carabao Cup success.

It means the focus is on the Premier League and securing the title, which they are huge favourites to do so. Victory tonight and they will go 12 points clear of Arsenal with eight matches to play, in what has increasingly turned into a procession of a title race. Much of the talk at Liverpool over the international break was over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future and a possible summer move to Real Madrid - Slot will be keen to get the focus back to matters on the pitch. The Englishman is out injured, and Slot has opted to start Curtis Jones at right-back in a surprise move.

A derby clash is the perfect opportunity to do so, though it comes only six weeks after a frustrating trip to Goodison Park when James Tarkowski delivered a stunning 98th-minute equaliser. The Toffees are unbeaten in nine Premier League matches, but they have won just once at Anfield since 1999. Follow all the action with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog below!

Slot explains Alisson absence

Arne Slot has been asked about Alisson missing out on the squad tonight.

He returned to Liverpool after sustaining a concussion while on international duty with Brazil, and he has not yet fully recovered.

"We as a club follow the protocol and he had to tick all the boxes and yesterday he didn't tick the last box, so that means he cannot start,” Slot says of Alisson.

"The good thing for us is we've got Caoimhin Kelleher, who has shown many times this season and in previous seasons that he's maybe even too good to be Ali's back-up."

Moyes: Everton further away from Liverpool than ever

Everton are looking for only their second win at Anfield since 1999.

David Moyes is in his second spell as Everton boss, having left the club in 2013, and he admitted at his pre-match press conference that the Toffees have a massive gap to close to their rivals.

"We might be further away from Liverpool than we've ever been at the moment," Moyes said.

"I think by the time we left here 12 years ago, I think we were much closer to Liverpool. We were competing in the same areas of the league at the time.

“I think at the moment it's probably the biggest gulf between the two clubs."

Ferdinand: Alexander-Arnold should be thanked

Liverpool fans should be thanking Trent Alexander-Arnold and wishing him good luck for his impending move to Real Madrid, according to Rio Ferdinand.

After months of speculation, January offers and his contract expiring in the summer, news emerged during the recent international break that Alexander-Arnold - currently sidelined with an ankle injury - was on the verge of agreeing to join the LaLiga giants.

Former Manchester United and England captain Ferdinand believes any ire felt by Liverpool fans over Alexander-Arnold’s likely exit should be aimed at the club.

“You should be saying thank you and good luck. Trent Alexander-Arnold, you didn't pay a penny for him. He came through your academy, he’s one of your own and he won it all,” he said on the latest episode of the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.

“This kid has been there, worn the shirt, been one of your best players, most productive players in one of the most successful periods in recent years.

“And because he's choosing to go and leave the club, not for a rival, not for a team in the Premier League, he's going to the biggest club right now in the world, which is Real Madrid. You should be saying: ‘You know what, I'd love him to stay but well done’.

“You should be clapping him off and giving him a hero's welcome when he eventually comes back in 15 years, when he finishes his career. The club have to take some responsibility. They've allowed him to get to this point.”

Last time they met...

It all kicked off!

James Tarkowski snatched a last-gasp point for Everton, and the fun continued after the full-time whistle.

Red cards for Curtis Jones, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Arne Slot, who had to serve a two-match touchline ban.

Interesting team selection from Slot!

Well then...

Alisson is not fit, despite Slot’s suggestion that he would be, so it’s Kelleher starting in goal for Liverpool tonight.

Jones looks set to fill in at right-back, with Slot preferring him to Quansah. That’s a bold call.

The likes of Nunez, Gakpo and Chiesa again have to settle for spots on the bench.

Slot targets set-piece improvement

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot believes his players have plenty to learn from Arsenal despite being poised to beat the Gunners to the Premier League title.

There has been little to separate Arsenal and Liverpool for long stretches of this season as the two sides established themselves as the leading title contenders in the first half of the season, though Slot pointed out that the Gunners set the standard from set-pieces.

He said: “We're always defensively the best team in the league when it comes to corners. We hardly concede goals. Then we concede three or four and it's already 26 per cent. We have some of the best players for defending corners.”

The Dutchman, who joined Liverpool from Feyenoord last summer, acknowledged the growing importance of set-pieces in the modern game.

He continued: “You cannot win a big game if you have a negative balance in your set-pieces. Arsenal shows us on a weekly basis the strength of set-pieces.

“We want to do better attacking corners but we hope to keep our record defensively on set-pieces.”
