Reds unconvincing again with 2-0 lead but find a way once more to maintain perfect start
Liverpool are celebrating their latest Merseyside derby win over Everton. The reigning champions remain top of the Premier League table after making it five wins from five to begin their title defence at a gloomy Anfield on Saturday, though once again they certainly did not have everything their own way.
Arne Slot’s side coasted into a comfortable 2-0 lead with a vibrant early showing in the lunchtime kick-off, having picked up from where they left off in Wednesday’s dramatic 3-2 victory against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, with Ryan Gravenberch doubling his tally for the season with a remarkable finish ahead of a fourth strike of the campaign from Hugo Ekitike that went through the legs of Jordan Pickford.
Everton weren’t really at the races in the first half but delivered a resurgent showing after the interval, inspired once again by Jack Grealish. His cross to the back post was laid off by Iliman Ndiaye for Idrissa Gana Gueye, who smashed a shot past Alisson to tee up an electric finale, where Liverpool just about held on with no need for another late goal having again wobbled badly with a 2-0 lead but not paid the price.
