Arne Slot needs to roll the dice to keep European dream alive

Liverpool could hand young star Rio Ngumoha a chance to impress on the biggest stage in Tuesday’s huge Champions League decider against Paris Saint-Germain.

Teenager Ngumoha on Saturday became the youngest Premier League scorer in Liverpool history when netting the opener against Fulham in a 2-0 win, and may have done enough to convince Arne Slot to roll the dice in a season-defining game.

Slot will surely abandon his disaster five-man defence, and could give Ngumoha the chance to shine in the three behind Hugo Ekitike, who was rested entirely at the weekend.

Saturday’s win over Fulham came at a possible cost, though, with Curtis Jones forced off with a potential groin injury.

The midfielder started against Fulham at the weekend but could only last until half-time. Slot, after the game, ruled the player out of the second-leg clash at Anfield, telling reporters: "He felt a little bit his groin. It wasn't the moment – he felt it already for a few minutes.

“So, let's hope for the best but I would be surprised if a player who comes off that he's available for Tuesday."

But Jones was able to join his team-mates in training on Monday morning, seemingly allaying any injury fears as he pushes for minutes against PSG. A start was always unlikely for Jones, but minutes off the bench is a possibility.

Elsewhere, Giorgi Mamardashvili will continue in goal, with Alisson Becker still not fit enough to play. Slot said of Alisson: "But he's working very hard on his recovery, so we hope to have him back in the near future. But he doesn't train with the team yet, so he will not be performing [on] Tuesday."

Jeremie Frimpong had a torrid time last week, so Dominik Szoboszlai could be drafted in at right-back to take on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, leaving Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Alisster as the midfield two behind Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz and, potentially, Ngumoha.

Gravenberch, Jones and captain Virgil van Dijk are all one yellow card away from being suspended for any semi-final first leg.
