Liverpool vs Burnley Line Ups: Isak Set for Debut from Bench

Liverpool’s return to Premier League action sees them travel to Turf Moor on Sunday, where the spotlight will inevitably fall on record signing Alexander Isak. The £125 million arrival from Newcastle has trained with his new team-mates for the first time this week and, while he is expected to feature against Burnley, his involvement is likely to be from the bench.

Isak’s Gradual Integration into Liverpool

Arne Slot has been quick to temper expectations surrounding his marquee signing. Isak arrives at Anfield without the benefit of a full pre-season, having forced through his transfer and then joined Sweden on international duty almost immediately afterwards.

The striker was a substitute during the 2-2 draw with Slovenia and managed only 18 minutes in Sweden’s shock defeat to Kosovo earlier this week. His limited involvement was the product of careful planning between Slot and Sweden coach Jon Dahl Tomasson, with both keen to avoid overloading the player.

Slot has stressed that Liverpool fans should not expect to see Isak completing full matches for several weeks. “He missed a proper pre-season – three or four months of team sessions – so we have to build him up gradually. We’ve signed him for the long term, not the next two weeks,” explained the Liverpool head coach.

With upcoming fixtures against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and Everton in the Merseyside derby, Liverpool are prioritising Isak’s fitness for the months ahead rather than rushing his debut.

Injury Concerns and Returning Options

Liverpool’s midfield options are reduced with Curtis Jones ruled out after sustaining a knock in the win over Arsenal before the international break. His absence opens space for rotation, with Wataru Endo and Joe Gomez among those in contention for recalls.

Jeremie Frimpong has returned to training following a hamstring problem and is pushing to reclaim his spot at right-back. Should Slot decide to protect him, Conor Bradley is available once again, while Dominik Szoboszlai could shift back into midfield after filling in impressively at full-back against Arsenal.

Ibrahima Konate has overcome a minor scare and comes into the match off the back of two full games for France, while Virgil van Dijk is expected to anchor the defence as usual.

Burnley Challenge at Turf Moor

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley side are still finding their rhythm in the top flight but Turf Moor remains a difficult ground to visit. With a physical style and committed support behind them, Burnley will aim to disrupt Liverpool’s rhythm and capitalise on any early uncertainty as Isak and other new arrivals continue to settle.

Liverpool, however, have the attacking depth to manage such encounters. Federico Chiesa, Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah provide pace and movement across the front line, while Florian Wirtz continues to grow in influence. Teenage prospect Rio Ngumoha is also an exciting option from the bench.
