London City Lionesses’ Boye-Hlorkah delighted with award after scoring best career goal | OneFootball

London City Lionesses forward Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah says that her long-range strike against Bristol City last month is the best goal of her career so far.

The 29-year-old found the back of the net from the edge of the centre-circle in The Pride’s 2-1 win against The Robins at Hayes Lane. Boye-Hlorkah’s impressive effort has earned her the Barclays Women’s Championship’s Goal of the Month award for September.

When speaking exclusively to WSL Full-Time about her goal, Boye-Hlorkah said that she identified a potential weakness in Barclays Women’s Championship goalkeeping and took full advantage.

“What I notice a lot in this league is that many of the goalkeepers stand high,” Boye-Hlorkah said. “They’re always off the line trying to stop the strikers from running in-behind.

“I saw early on that she was off her line and then Julia [Roddar] stopped them from pressing us, won the ball back and my first thought was to just hit it. I backed myself [to score] and it went in.”

Boye-Hlorkah has scored many good goals in her career but she says that the strike against Bristol City is her best so far.

She said “In an actual match, that’s the best goal that I’ve scored. Sometimes in training, we try and hit the crossbar from the halfway line, so maybe that has come in handy.

“I wouldn’t say it was a one-off, I feel like I look for that shot a couple of times in a game. That one time, I actually pulled the trigger.”

With one personal accolade now in the bag, Boye-Hlorkah has set her sights on gaining further honours this season and she is hoping for some stern competition from her teammates.

She said “My main target is to keep delivering for the team. As long as I’m doing my job along with the team, hopefully, we can get more points on the board.

“The award is a big award for me. I really do like the goal and I’ve watched it back a few times but hopefully, that’s not the best goal I score this year. Hopefully, I’m competing with a couple of the girls in the team as well.

“Izzy [Goodwin] has got a lot of goals right now and I love the fact that I’ve got someone in the team that I can be competing with. Hopefully, we can have a little battle to score goals in the league. I can push her, she can push me and some of the other girls can be chipping in [with goals] as well. We’ve got a lot of good players in the team.”

London City Lionesses are next in action on Saturday 2 November 2024 when they travel to Sheffield United in the Barclays Women’s Championship.
