Lubo Penev is facing one of the hardest battles of his life away from the pitch, with the Asociación de Futbolistas del Valencia CF stepping in and Valencia, Atlético de Madrid and Celta de Vigo backing a fundraiser for a complex, high-cost operation.
Trud News reports the medical process could require around 150,000 euros, underlining the scale of the challenge.
His illness became public in early December after a Facebook post by his wife, Kristina Yulianova Mitseva, who urged people to stand with him and give hope.
The former striker has kidney cancer. He was hospitalised in Germany and is now in Bulgaria, where he hopes to undergo major surgery.
Fernando Giner, president of Valencia’s players’ association, said Penev called to thank him repeatedly, adding that the treatment will be hard and long and that he still needs help.
Giner stressed the support will continue. He said the most serious phase has not yet passed, Penev remains in danger and is exploring options, and it seems the first intervention went well. He heard a hoarse, struggling voice, yet one that sounded encouraged.
He added that Penev is determined to live but fully aware of the gravity of his condition, grateful for the help and still in need of support. Giner said he has spoken with Valencia, Atlético and Celta and they will be there for him.
