Joan Garcia returned from the World Cup as a champion without playing a single minute, and Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has now explained why the FC Barcelona goalkeeper remained on the bench throughout the tournament.

As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, De la Fuente insisted that the decision was based on continuity rather than a lack of confidence in Barca’s new goalkeeper.

Spain relied on Unai Simon as their undisputed number one from the opening match through to the World Cup final, leaving Joan Garcia without an opportunity to make his tournament debut.

De la Fuente explained that the goalkeeper position is unique because regular rotation is far more difficult than in outfield roles.

He said:

“Unai Simon played and in goal you can’t make changes like in other positions, but he had three of the top five in the world (Joan Garcia and David Raya).”

The Spain coach also made it clear that Joan’s absence from the pitch should not be viewed negatively.

Rather than changing goalkeepers during a successful tournament, De la Fuente preferred to maintain stability in one of football’s most sensitive positions.

Barcelona have every reason to be encouraged

Joan Garcia may not have played, but the tournament still represented another important step in his development.

Being trusted as part of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad, training every day alongside elite international teammates and receiving such strong public praise from De la Fuente all reinforce Barcelona’s belief that they have secured one of Europe’s most promising goalkeepers.

For Barca supporters, the coach’s comments should be viewed as reassurance rather than a cause for disappointment. Joan was not overlooked because of poor performances or a lack of quality. He simply found himself behind an established first-choice goalkeeper during a successful tournament.

The fact that De la Fuente already places him among the world’s elite goalkeepers speaks volumes about the reputation Joan has built over the past year.
