Luis de la Fuente has named Spain’s 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, which begins on 11 June. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, no Real Madrid players are included, with Dean Huijsen and Gonzalo missing out, while Barcelona supply eight.
Atlético contribute three, Pubill, Llorente and Baena. The headline newcomers are Atlético centre-back Marc Pubill and Osasuna winger Víctor Múñoz. Seven players are based in the Premier League, with Grimaldo at Bayer Leverkusen and Fabián Ruiz at Paris Saint-Germain.
Twelve from Spain’s 2022 World Cup squad return.
De la Fuente said the call-up had been carefully planned over many months, with every scenario weighed and some omissions also viable. He stressed he does not pick by club and wants players proud to represent Spain.
On goalkeepers he said any of the three would be a reliable starter. He added that Eric García has worked with him since under-19 level and that he knows Pubill from under-21 and Olympic squads.
He accepted the favourites tag, saying Spain feel capable of winning but that it guarantees nothing. He also saluted absentees Morata and Carvajal for their leadership, adding the door remains open.
Spain begin preparations this weekend at Las Rozas. They face Iraq in A Coruña on four June, travel to Chattanooga on five June, then meet Peru in Puebla on nine June before group games against Cabo Verde, Arabia Saudí and Uruguay. Nine support players will join the camp.
