The club said in a statement that Luke Ayling has signed a new one-year contract, keeping him at Middlesbrough until 2027. Boro are second in the Championship.

The defender ended eight years with Leeds United in 2024, initially moving to Boro on loan in January until the end of the campaign. He made the switch permanent in the summer.

Ayling, now 34, made 28 appearances in 2024-25 as Middlesbrough finished 10th. He has already featured 38 times this season.

He has operated at right-back and centre-back and has captained the team on several occasions.

Delighted with the extension, he accepted last season was not great for him and set out to prove he could still play at this level. He has enjoyed this campaign.

With seven games remaining, the focus is on a strong finish, with backing from the stands seen as vital, and on pushing for a Premier League return.
