Central Lyon saw jubilant scenes on Saturday night after France and Morocco sealed men's World Cup quarter-final places.

According to Le Progres, the Rhône prefecture had pre-positioned officers to manage supporter flows and described a largely festive atmosphere, with no notable incidents recorded.

Videos posted on Snapchat showed roads blocked by crowds after Morocco's win at around 21:00, making driving difficult for motorists.

Images later showed celebrations in and around bars after France's victory at around 1:00.

The two nations meet at 22:00 on Thursday in the quarter-final.

On 14 December 2022, Les Bleus beat the Lions of the Atlas in the semi-final at the previous World Cup. Post-match celebrations in Lyon were marred by suspected far-right groups who gathered to carry out racially motivated attacks on Moroccan supporters, triggering crowd surges at Place Bellecour in the 2nd arrondissement.

Local authorities seeking to avoid a repeat should prepare a security plan that factors in the far-right threat.
