We looked at three EFL clubs who should have Millwall striker Macaulay Langstaff on their radar this summer.
With question marks over his future at Millwall, striker Macaulay Langstaff is likely to be on the radar of a number of clubs this summer.
After a prolific two-year spell in the National League and League Two with Notts County, Langstaff made the step up to the Championship last summer as he joined Millwall for a fee of £700,000 plus add-ons.
However, it was a frustrating debut season at The Den for Langstaff as he struggled to make an impact, and his game time became increasingly limited in the second half of the campaign after the arrival of manager Alex Neil in December.
It was claimed earlier in the summer that Langstaff was keen to remain at Millwall this summer and fight for his place, but after the club signed Josh Coburn on a permanent basis from Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £5 million after his successful loan spell last season, the 28-year-old may find himself down the pecking order again in the upcoming campaign.
With that in mind, Langstaff may decide to push for a move before the end of the transfer window, and we looked at three EFL clubs who should be closely monitoring developments regarding his future.
Bolton Wanderers were billed as one of the promotion favourites in League One last season, but despite an initial upturn in form after Steven Schumacher replaced Ian Evatt in January, they finished the campaign in an underwhelming eighth place.
Schumacher has overseen a big rebuild of his squad this summer, with the likes of Teddy Sharman-Lowe, Xavier Simons, Amario Cozier-Duberry, Thierry Gale and Sam Dalby arriving at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, but the Trotters were dealt a huge blow last month as last season's 19-goal top scorer Aaron Collins made a shock move to ambitious League Two side MK Dons.
Wanderers currently have Dalby, Victor Adeboyejo, John McAtee and the out-of-favour Dan Nlundulu on their books in the forward areas, but as he searches for a replacement for Collins, Schumacher has urged the board to bring in a new striker within the next week to allow him time to work with them before the season starts.
It may be difficult for Bolton to complete a deal for Langstaff that quickly, and there would be an element of risk to his signing given his struggles in the Championship last season, but if Schumacher wants a clinical finisher, the Millwall man could certainly fit the bill.
There is a feel-good factor in the air at Reading ahead of the new season after Rob Couhig's takeover brought Dai Yongge's nightmare reign to an end back in May, but manager Noel Hunt still has plenty of work to do to build a squad capable of competing for promotion in League One.
The Royals have brought in six new signings so far this summer, with many more likely to arrive before the end of the window, while they have also tied key players such as Joel Pereira and Lewis Wing down to new contracts.
However, Jayden Wareham rejected Reading's offer of a new contract in order to join fellow third tier side Exeter City, while Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan is yet to commit his future to the club, and that leaves Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Mark O'Mahony as the club's only senior striker currently.
Given the shortage of options in the forward areas, Langstaff would likely receive plenty of game time at the Select Car Leasing Stadium next season, and if provided with quality service from the likes of Wing, Harvey Knibbs, Charlie Savage and Mamadi Camara, he could rediscover his prolific goalscoring form with the Royals.
Bristol Rovers looked well on course to achieve safety when they sat nine points clear of the drop zone in League One in mid-March, but after picking up just one point from their final 10 games, they were relegated to League Two.
It has been a summer of change at the Memorial Stadium, with Darrell Clarke returning for a second spell as manager following the departure of Inigo Calderon, while the Gas have completed seven new signings so far, including Luke Southwood, Macaulay Southam-Hales, Alfie Kilgour and Josh McEachran.
However, while Rovers have bolstered their defence and midfield, a lack of goals was their biggest problem during their slide down the table last season, and as Clarke continues his search for a proven number nine, it has been reported that Langstaff is a player the club admire.
It may be difficult for the Gas to complete a deal for Langstaff, particularly with strong League One interest in his services, but he scored an impressive 29 goals in 49 games during his last season in League Two for Notts County, and his arrival would be a game-changer for their promotion prospects if they were able to win the race for his signature.
