A winning start for France at the World Cup. Deschamp's side beat Senegal 3-1 in New York in their opening Group I match. Both AC Milan players, Mike Maignan and Adrien Rabiot, started and played the full 90 minutes. After a difficult first half, France finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute through Mbappé. The French doubled their advantage in the 82nd when Barcola finished off a superb move initiated by Rabiot, whose incisive through ball split the Senegal defence, allowing the substitute to delicately lift his finish over Mendy. In the second half, Senegal pulled one back late-on through Mbaye, but Mbappé responded immediately with a stunning strike from long range to seal the 3-1 victory. France will return to action on Monday 22 June against Iraq.
