Kicker reports that last-placed Bundesliga side Mainz 05 are looking to a familiar face in their quest for additional attacking assistance. Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi may be in line for a re-union with his former Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer. Awoniyi is currently hurt, but still made only four Premier League appearances this season prior to incurring injury.
Awoniyi has steadily seen his production numbers (and estimated market value) decline since moving to the Premier League on a €20.5m transfer from Union nearly three-and-a-half years ago.. A return to the Bundesliga and the newly-appointed Mainz head coach might constitute an attractive offer for the Nigerian international.
Awoniyi arrived at Union Berlin on loan from Liverpool during the 2020/21 campaign. At the time, Köpenick served as Awoniyi’s seventh loan locale. Liverpool had even loaned Awoniyi out to Germany twice before. He spent the 2015/16 season in the 2. Bundesliga with FSV Frankfurt and (interesting enough) played for Mainz in the German top flight the season prior to heading to Union.
Awoniyi’s first season with Union only produced five goals, but Fischer’s Eisernen opted to purchase him permanently anyway ahead of their forthcoming season contesting the UEFA Europa Conference League. Awoniyi repaid the trust placed in him, scoring an incredible 20 goals across all competitions and helping Union qualify for the Europa League the very next season.
Union ultimately sent Awoniyi back to the Isle in the summer of 2022, flipping Fischer’s well-cultivated project for a handsome profit. Awoniyi – who scored four goals for Fischer in seven Conference League appearances during the 2021/22 cycle – could potentially help Mainz continue their promising Conference League campaign this year.
