Max O'Leary preserved that advantage with a sharp save from Brad Potts' header (56.) as Preston pressed from corners.

Daryl Dike came on for Heggebo (70.) and sealed it with a powerful finish from Jayson Molumby's cut-back (77.).

Milutin Osmajic then headed against the bar in the fourth minute of second half stoppage time, with Lewis Dobbin nodding wide moments later as Preston pushed late.

Preston had 52.5% possession and nine attempts, but found the target only once. West Bromwich Albion produced three efforts on goal from eight attempts and made 49 clearances.

Next, Preston visit Birmingham. West Bromwich Albion host Watford.
