Crushing News

Tuesday night’s 1–0 victory for Club América over Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 should have been the main headline.

Instead, it was overshadowed by a devastating moment: the serious injury suffered by América’s starting goalkeeper and one of the three men expected to represent Mexico at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Luis Ángel Malagón.

Across Mexico, the soccer world woke up to worrying news. Malagón, 29, isn’t just beloved by América fans; he’s respected by supporters throughout the country. Soon after the match it was confirmed that the goalkeeper suffered a rupture of the Achilles tendon in his left foot.

The diagnosis means he will miss the rest of the Clausura 2026 season. Even more painfully, he will miss the World Cup, which kicks off on June 11 when Mexico faces South Africa.

Keeper Wars

Malagón had been included in every squad called up by head coach Javier Aguirre since his return to the national team in mid-2024. Although he had lost the starting spot to Raúl Rangel of Chivas In recent matches, the two had been battling for the starting role heading into the World Cup. Surprisingly, the goalkeeper position has become one of the most uncertain spots on the roster.

Neither Rangel nor Malagón had fully convinced Aguirre in recent months. That’s unusual for Mexico, a country famous for producing elite goalkeepers.

Even though Malagón had recently been benched, he still seemed like a lock to make Aguirre’s final 26-player World Cup roster. That changed overnight.

Shortly after the injury was confirmed, Malagón shared a heartbreaking message on social media: “Hurt and sad, with my soul shattered, trying to understand the situation and asking why?”

Throughout the past year, Aguirre’s regular goalkeeper call-ups had been Malagón, Rangel, and Carlos Acevedo — all from Liga MX. Meanwhile, the door was also opening again for veteran legend Guillermo Ochoa, who currently plays for AEL Limassol in Cyprus.

The Return of Memo?

Mexico has already requested Ochoa’s release for the upcoming March friendlies against Portugal on March 28 and Belgium on March 31. Those games may offer the clearest preview yet of Aguirre’s World Cup plans.

Before Malagón’s injury, the expected goalkeeper trio for the tournament looked something like this:• Rangel as the possible starter• Malagón as the backup• Ochoa as the third goalkeeper — and potentially making history by appearing in a sixth World Cup.

Now everything has changed.

With Malagón ruled out and Rangel coming off a few recent mistakes, the big question suddenly becomes unavoidable. Who will start in goal for Mexico in the opening match against South Africa on June 11?

The March international window will likely provide some answers, but for now, the race is wide open.

A few months ago, Aguirre sounded relaxed about the position.

“It’s a spot where I feel pretty calm. Whoever plays. Luis Ángel started in the Gold Cup and had clean sheets, which made me happy. Now it’s Tala’s turn, and in two situations I didn’t like his decision-making. But the goalkeepers we have are cold-blooded, agile, and brave.”

That confidence may now be tested.

Realistically, the starting job will probably come down to Rangel and Ochoa. The other candidates fighting to replace Malagón as the third goalkeeper simply don’t yet carry the same weight or experience.

So Who Could Take that Third Spot?

Carlos AcevedoThe Santos Laguna goalkeeper looks like the most logical candidate. Acevedo has already received multiple call-ups under Aguirre, even though he hasn’t seen much playing time with the national team recently.

Andrés GudiñoThe Cruz Azul keeper has suddenly gained attention following Malagón’s injury. Gudiño is enjoying a strong season and reports suggest he’s now being monitored closely by the national team, even though he has never been called up to the senior squad.

Andrés SánchezA younger option who impressed during Mexico’s South American tour. Aguirre reportedly likes him and continues to keep him on the radar.

Alex PadillaThe goalkeeper from Athletic Club has seen minutes in the Copa del Rey this season, although he remains a backup in La Liga. A World Cup call-up still feels like a long shot — but in soccer, things can change quickly.
