According to L'Équipe, Argentina’s 2-1 win over England to reach the 2026 World Cup final was followed by Giovani Lo Celso unveiling a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas".

During the on-pitch celebrations, Lo Celso and Nicolas Otamendi held the banner aloft, then placed it on the turf.

The act gave the scenes a political and commemorative edge.

The Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, are administered by the United Kingdom but have been claimed by Buenos Aires since the 19th century.

The dispute peaked in 1982 with a short, deadly war that left a lasting impact on both countries, particularly Argentine society.
