A man has been arrested over alleged racist abuse reported during the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park on 22 March.

According to Sunderland Echo, the referee temporarily stopped the match after SAFC full-back Lutsharel Geertruida reported abuse from the terraces.

Officers detained a 45-year-old man from the Gateshead area on 31 March on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
