Manchester United are prepared to address their goalkeeping concerns, but they face a major obstacle.
United have strengthened their attack by agreeing a £71million deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo. The Cameroon international is expected to join Ruben Amorim’s squad for the pre-season tour.
However, his fellow countryman, Andre Onana, faces an uncertain few weeks after suffering a hamstring injury.
Earlier today, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are ready to step up their pursuit of a new goalkeeper after Onana’s injury.
United have been linked with a number of goalkeepers, including Burnley number one James Trafford. In May, it was reported that the Red Devils could look to sign the Englishman amid concerns over Onana’s ability.
If Ineos are serious about signing the 22-year-old, they may have to act fast, as City have entered the race for his signature.
According to Fabrizio Romano, City are considering a move for the England U21 international.
City sold Trafford, their academy product, to Burnley in 2023. At Turf Moor, the youngster has gone on to establish himself as one of the most exciting shot-stoppers in England.
He kept an incredible 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship appearances to help Burnley clinch Premier League promotion.
Meanwhile, Ederson endured a tough 2024/25 campaign. As such, City could bring Trafford back to Manchester, having already made “contacts in the recent days.”
Newcastle United are also keen on Trafford, but City have the advantage as they included a buy-back clause in their agreement with Burnley. However, it is added that City’s move for their former player relies on the futures of their current goalkeeping options.
United have been strongly linked with Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez as well.
The World Cup winner is willing to move to Old Trafford. However, it is understood that United’s pursuit of the Argentine international hinges on Onana’s future.
The Mancunians will only sign Martinez if Onana departs. At the moment, the Cameroonian wants to stay at the club and fight for his place under Amorim.
