Michael Carrick's side have made initial enquiries to discuss a deal for the Netherlands international, who scored a fine goal during his country's 2-2 draw with Japan in their World Cup opener at the weekend.
A number of clubs in thePremier League and Europe are interested in Summerville, following West Ham's relegation last season.
Summerville was one of West Ham's better performers despite relegation, scoring five times in thePremier League and providing two assists.
According toThe Athletic, Manchester United have been enquired and are aware that Summerville is expected to cost around £50million this summer.
West Ham need to raise around £150million in sales after relegation, with the Red Devils also expressing interest in midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
The club's pursuit of Summerville will hinge on Marcus Rashford's future. The England international will return to Old Trafford after Barcelona decided against activating the €30million buy option in his season-long loan.
Barcelona's purchase option expired on Monday, with the Spanish champions deciding against the deal after signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle. Bayern Munich and Premier League teams are monitoring Rashford, who is available for £40m.
