Manchester United’s recent struggles have put the spotlight back on Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese head coach invested a fortune in his squad before the start of the new season after a dismal 2024/25 campaign in which they finished 15th.

Amorim attempted to address his goalscoring woes by signing Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Senne Lammens was signed with a view to solving the long-standing goalkeeper conundrum, with the Red Devils spending over £200 million in total on new arrivals.

While the team has shown signs of revival, the English giants have lacked consistency so far, leaving fans frustrated.

A dismal month of December

United played six games in the Premier League last month, registering two wins and three draws so far. Their solitary defeat arrived against Aston Villa, while Amorim’s side also dropped points against West Ham United, Bournemouth and at Old Trafford earlier this week against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Red Devils are now sixth in the league table after 19 games, three points behind Liverpool in fourth and 15 behind leaders Arsenal. The situation has added to speculation over the future of their Portuguese head coach, with a report suggesting that the club is eyeing Oliver Glasner as his possible replacement.

Meanwhile, Chelsea, who are fifth in the league and level on points with United, recently parted ways with Enzo Maresca. The Italian manager worked with Red Devils CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox during their time together at Manchester City, prompting talks of a reunion at the Theatre of Dreams.

Acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano has now shed light on the matter.

United not eyeing Enzo Maresca

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano insisted that United are not planning to replace Amorim with Maresca.

“On Enzo Maresca and the links we had today with the Manchester United job, probably linked to the fact that Omar Berrada, who is now one of the leading faces of the Manchester United project, used to work with Enzo Maresca at Manchester City in the past,” said Romano.

“At this stage, I am told there are no conversation, no talks taking place between Man Utd and Enzo Maresca. In this moment, the club is interested in the future again, it is not for the present, in Enzo Maresca, Manchester City.”

“Man Utd remain on their stance, supporting and backing Ruben Amorim, not planning for anything different at this stage. Then, guys, we can’t predict the future.”

“These Maresca stories showing you how sometimes in the managers’ market, things can change in a few days, in a few weeks, and that’s what happened also with Enzo Maresca, out of Chelsea in a completely unexpected way at the beginning of January. But again, for Amorim, at the moment, that’s not the case, and Man Utd keep supporting their manager.”

Amorim has registered 24 wins and 21 defeats from his 62 games in charge of the Red Devils to date, managing a 38.71% win ratio, the lowest of his managerial career.

Final Thoughts

INEOS showed that they have a long-term plan by keeping their trust in Amorim following United’s worst season in the Premier League era. They even invested in their head coach’s philosophy, adding players who fit his tactics to the squad over the summer.

As such, the Red Devils are unlikely to throw it all away. However, Amorim will continue to be under pressure unless he manages to improve his team’s fortunes in the coming weeks.
