Manchester United head to St James’ Park carrying both momentum and uncertainty. Momentum because recent results have steadied their pursuit of a Champions League place. Uncertainty because the Man Utd predicted lineup for the Newcastle clash remains influenced by several injury concerns.
Michael Carrick’s side continue to evolve during his interim spell in charge, and the trip to Newcastle United presents another examination of both squad depth and tactical resilience.
The potential return of Mason Mount offers one positive element. The midfielder has been sidelined since sustaining an injury during training before the 3-2 victory over Fulham.

Mount has now returned to training at Carrington and may re enter contention this week. Carrick, however, stopped short of confirming his availability during his latest press conference.
Elsewhere, Luke Shaw is the main concern following the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. The left back was forced off during the first half after a heavy challenge.

After the match, Carrick provided a cautious update.
“just [wasn’t] feeling too well so hopefully [he] will be feeling better soon.”
Further clarity may arrive closer to kick off.
“We’ve still got a bit of time to the game so we’ll see how they feel.”
Manchester United’s defensive depth is under scrutiny ahead of the Newcastle match. Harry Maguire remains a doubt after being substituted during the Crystal Palace victory.

Another significant absence involves Lisandro Martinez, who is recovering from a calf injury sustained before the win against Everton.
Carrick offered a measured update regarding the defender’s recovery.
“We will have to wait and see,” he explained. “He is close and he is not far away, but it is hard to say at the moment.”
With Patrick Dorgu also unavailable and Matthijs de Ligt sidelined, the defensive structure may rely on youth and flexibility.
If Shaw, Maguire and Martinez are unavailable, the responsibility may fall to Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven in central defence.
While defence presents uncertainty, midfield appears more settled. Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo are expected to anchor the centre of the pitch.
Ahead of them, captain Bruno Fernandes continues to provide the creative direction for United’s attack.

Wide areas should feature Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, two players capable of stretching Newcastle’s defensive shape.
Leading the line is likely to be Benjamin Sesko, who scored during his first start under Carrick against Crystal Palace.

United are expected to deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation at St James’ Park.
Man Utd predicted lineup: Lammens, Dalot, Yoro, Heaven, Mazraoui, Casemiro, Mainoo, Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha, Sesko.
Kick off is scheduled for 8.15pm GMT on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
For Manchester United, the predicted lineup carries significance beyond this single fixture. A positive result against Newcastle would strengthen their position in the race for Champions League qualification and reinforce the growing belief that Carrick’s side are regaining their rhythm.
