Manchester United have been knocked out of the Women’s Champions League at the quarter-final stage after a 5-3 aggregate defeat to Bayern Munich.

United travelled to Bavaria with an uphill task ahead of them, having lost the first leg 3-2 at Old Trafford. However on their maiden campaign in the competition, they were determined to put up a fight.

The visitors started brilliantly and were the better side throughout the first half at the Allianz Arena. An error from Bayern goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic gifted Melvin Mallard with a golden opportunity in the 11th minute. The French forward slotted into an empty net to give United the lead and equalise the tie at 3-3.

After the break United sat back, failing to register a shot until the 87th minute and allowing Bayern to flood forward. With the aggregate score still level, Marc Skinner’s side desperately held on.

The game looked to be heading to extra time but the pressure from the hosts finally paid off in the closing stages. Bayern captain Glodis Viggosdottir headed home from a corner to regain the lead with just ten minutes remaining.

Linda Dallmann turned in from another Bayern corner just four minutes later, putting the tie out of reach. The hosts secured a 2-1 victory on the night and a 5-3 win on aggregate. They are expected to meet Barcelona in the semi-finals.

For United, tonight caps a disappointing week. Sandwiched between the two defeats to Bayern, the Reds lost 3-0 at Old Trafford in the Manchester derby. United’s position in the WSL makes it unlikely that they will feature in the Champions League again next season.
