Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has warned that "relegation" could be on the cards next season if the club fail to sufficiently recruit in the summer transfer window.
United have hit new post-2013 lows this season, slipping to 13th in the Premier League table. Ruben Amorim has replaced Erik ten Hag as head coach, but the Portuguese's insistence on implementing his own system amid a lack of players suited to it has delayed any upturn in fortunes.
Wing-back Patrick Dorgu was the only January recruit, an example of a player specifically geared towards Amorim's setup. Geovany Quenda is another in a similar mould who could join in summer.
But Scholes considers other central positions more of a priority, insisting that strengthening is needed right through the spine of the team.
"There are a few things that are concerning. There's a lot of stuff [Amorim] needs to do, we all know that, especially in transfer windows, but I don't see a core of players," Scholes said during an appearance on a new episode of The Overlap Fan Debate.
"When you look at teams, you look right down the spine of a team. Liverpool: great goalkeeper, great centre-half, forwards, midfielders, whatever. I don't think United have any of that in any position."
Reeling off a full wish list, the retired star said: "I think a new goalkeeper is needed, possibly two centre-halves, two centre midfield players, and two centre forwards."
Scholes suggested that a central midfielder and an imposing centre forward, implying he isn’t convinced by Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee, are the two most important areas to address.
“When you've got that spine right, then you can add bits to it,” he said. “That spine, that core, is so important. If they don't get that right this summer, this might sound ridiculous, but the form since this manager is in, they could be looking at relegation. I'm telling you, it's been so bad.”
