Manchester United have been dealt a new blow on the market as Nuno Mendes is reportedly close to extending his stay at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Red Devils are keen to bolster their left flank as Luke Shaw is still suffering torrid times with injuries while Tyrell Malacia has yet to prove his worth to the cause.

Therefore, the Premier League giants have been chasing some of the best available options on the market. In recent months, they set their sights on Alphonso Davies who was at the time running on an expiring contract. However, the Canadian ended up penning a contract extension with Bayern Munich, much to United’s dismay.

INEOS then shifted their attention towards Mendes who is considered amongst the elite in his playing role and is running on a contract expiring in June 2026. The Reds have been keen to reunite Ruben Amorim with his old Sporting CP disciple, and have also been encouraged to do so by fans and observers, with some insisting it would be ‘one of the best coups of all time’.

But like Davies before him, Mendes has now agreed to prolong his stay with his current employers, at least according to French newspaper L’Equipe.

The source claims that after months of negotiations, the Ligue 1 champions have finally managed to make a significant breakthrough in their attempts to put the Portuguese player’s signature on a new deal.

The 22-year-old has reportedly made a U-turn, and is now happy to stay at Le Parc des Princes, with PSG coach Luis Enrique playing a decisive role in the player’s choice.

Therefore, the Red Devils have been left high and dry once more, so they must now resort to other options.
