Mainoo has been frozen out by United despite his early promise, which led to Leeds being linked with a loan earlier in the season.

The report indicates United would rather not send him to another Premier League club, while Napoli and Bayern Munich are among the sides showing interest.

Daniel Farke wants to strengthen his squad, though Leeds are prioritising attacking reinforcements and have scouts assessing options across Europe.

With Calvert-Lewin in prolific form and Lukas Nmecha also on four Premier League goals, Farke has been able to use a two-man forward line.

Nmecha’s recent injury underlines the lack of depth in attack, and Noah Okafor has struggled to offer the same physical presence. As January approaches, a powerful alternative up front may now be the priority over a playmaker.
