Manchester United are preparing to lodge a formal complaint with Professional Game Match Officials Limited following a series of controversial refereeing decisions during their Premier League draw with Bournemouth.
Senior officials at Old Trafford are said to be furious after what they believe was another costly VAR error in a match that ended level.
The incident at the centre of the dispute came during the second half when winger Amad Diallo appeared to be wrestled to the ground inside the Bournemouth penalty area while Manchester United were leading 1-0.
Referee Stuart Attwell waved play on despite being positioned close to the challenge.
Moments later Bournemouth equalised through Ryan Christie, turning what United believe should have been a two-goal advantage into a level contest.
The decision was checked by VAR but officials chose not to overturn the on-field call.
Manchester United believe the challenge on Diallo was a clear foul and that a penalty should have been awarded.
There is also frustration that the incident was similar to a later challenge which resulted in a penalty and a red card against United.
Defender Harry Maguire was dismissed for bringing down Evanilson inside the box, allowing Junior Kroupi to score from the resulting spot kick and secure a draw for Bournemouth.
United’s view is that the foul on Diallo mirrored the offence committed by Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert earlier in the match.
Caretaker manager Michael Carrick did not hide his frustration after the final whistle.
Carrick described the decision as astonishing and questioned how one penalty could be given while the other was ignored.
Club officials have backed their manager and believe the incident had a major influence on the outcome of the match.
United had already scored once from the penalty spot earlier in the game through captain Bruno Fernandes.
They believe a second penalty would likely have given them a decisive two-goal lead midway through the half.
Instead Bournemouth were level within moments and the match ended in a draw.
The complaint will reportedly be raised directly with PGMOL chief Howard Webb.
Manchester United have already contacted the refereeing body previously this season regarding what they consider to be a number of incorrect decisions.
Those include a disputed red-card incident involving Nathan Collins during a match against Brentford, a denied penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers and a disallowed goal scored by Lisandro Martinez against Burnley.
Director of football Jason Wilcox is expected to formally raise the latest issue with Webb.
The club are also likely to question the nine minutes of stoppage time that were added at the end of the match.
The draw leaves Manchester United third in the Premier League table but under pressure from the chasing pack in the race for Champions League qualification.
Liverpool, Aston Villa and Chelsea remain close behind as the season approaches its final stretch.
