Real Madrid reached the Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-1 win against Manchester City, driven by Aurélien Tchouaméni’s commanding midfield display. It is their 41st last-eight appearance, a record, as Tijjani Reijnders offered little for the hosts.

According to L'Équipe, Tchouaméni was rated eight and Thibaut Courtois also received eight. Courtois saved from Rayan Cherki on three minutes and from Rodri on four, then produced a superb reflex stop from Erling Haaland on 23, adding another save with his foot later in the half.

On 28 minutes Tchouaméni launched a counter that Vinicius failed to finish, and Abdukodir Khusanov made a fine recovery on Brahim Diaz. Haaland levelled on 41, with Thiago Pitarch, rated four, overpowered by Jérémy Doku in the build-up. Khusanov was booked for a deliberate foul on Vinicius at 45+4, and Courtois was forced off at half-time, with Lounine, rated seven, coming on at 46.

Reijnders, rated three and used as a No 10 behind Haaland, was withdrawn at the break for Nathan Aké, rated five. Khusanov made another superb recovery on Brahim Diaz on 56, and Haaland, rated four, was replaced by Omar Marmoush on 57. Tchouaméni then went close with a header from a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner on 69.

At 90+3 Tchouaméni supplied the pass for Vinicius to score. His influence underpinned Madrid’s win, while Khusanov impressed defensively throughout.
