Burnley are bracing themselves for negotiations with Manchester City over James Trafford, despite the Etihad Stadium club holding a buy-back clause on the player.

Manchester City have truly taken the summer transfer window by the scruff of the neck after five new additions to their squad as they build a winning team for the years to come – following a disappointing season by their own standards last term.

Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki have all come in as Hugo Viana conducts a thorough audit of Pep Guardiola’s current side before the new Premier League campaign kicks off next month.

Kevin De Bruyne, Scott Carson and Kyle Walker have all been shown the door already this summer, with all of James McAtee, Kalvin Phillips and Jack Grealish also expected to find new clubs before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

After addressing some key frailties in Guardiola’s squad early in the window, Manchester City are expected to add a new right-back to their ranks to replace Walker, with Newcastle’s Valentino Livramento of interest to bosses at the Etihad Stadium.

Departures are likely to determine how the remainder of the window shapes up for the 2023 treble winners, who have seen the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Ederson and Stefan Ortega Moreno attract interest as Viana and co streamline Guardiola’s bloated squad and trim the wage bill ahead of the new campaign.

McAtee is valued between £25-30 million by Manchester City and is assessing his options in Germany as the 22-year-old picks his next club, with Ederson and Ortega Moreno also linked with possible exits despite Guardiola publicly stating he expects the pair to stay put into the 2025-26 season.

Ederson wanted to move to the Saudi Pro League last summer and a transfer failed to materialise owing to Manchester City’s reported £50 million valuation of the 31-year-old, who like Ortega Moreno is entering the final 12 months of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium.

According to the information of Sky Sports News, Manchester City have now approached Burnley over re-signing goalkeeper James Trafford and want to negotiate on their £40 million buy-back clause on the City Football Academy graduate.

In an indication as to the valuation on the England international’s shoulders from the side of Turf Moor officials, Newcastle United had a bid of around £27 million – inclusive of add-ons – turned down by Burnley in June.

It is explained that should Trafford leave Burnley, the Clarets would be in the market for a new goalkeeper and Ortega Moreno one option being assessed as uncertainty looms over the Germany international’s club future after an unconvincing season between the sticks at Manchester City.

Trafford represents an attractive purchase for City, having gained significant first-team experience since leaving his boyhood club for Burnley two years ago to play under Blues legend and then Clarets boss Vincent Kompany.
