Manchester City have confirmed on their club website that the recent media reports were correct, and Pep Guardiola will step down as their manager this summer.

Guardiola will reportedly continue his relationship with City Football Group, taking up a role as a Global Ambassador, giving technical advice to clubs in the group.

But Sunday’s game against Aston Villa will be Guardiola’s last as City’s manager.

As Arsenal were grinding out a win against Burnley on Monday to put themselves one result away from the Premier League title, Oliver Holt broke the news for the Daily Mail that Guardiola would leave City at the end of this season.

Further reports from David Ornstein and Sam Lee of The Athletic then confirmed that Enzo Maresca is expected to take over from the Spanish manager.

Arsenal have obviously been involved in plenty of trophy battles with City, with Guardiola generally coming out on top.

The Gunners did win the FA Cup after seeing off City in 2020, and they defeated City in the Community Shield in 2023, but undoubtedly the team’s biggest success against Guardiola’s City side was confirmed on Tuesday, as Arsenal confirmed the Premier League title.

There’s long been talk about Guardiola potentially leaving City, or about City finally being punished for the many Premier League charges being brought against them.

But Arsenal fans will be glad they managed to win the league before either of those things happened, and that there’s no asterisk on their success.
