Manchester City have a decision to make on Vitor Reis’ immediate future as the Brazilian approaches the end of his season-long loan at Girona.
Reis joined Manchester City from boyhood club Palmeiras in January 2025 as an emergence defensive reinforcement alongside Uzbek star Abdukodir Khusanov, marking the beginning of a major revamp of Pep Guardiola’s squad.
The 20-year-old has been one of the best defenders in La Liga this season, raising his stock and impressive officials at the Etihad Stadium throughout a successful stint on loan in the Spanish top-flight that has put Reis firmly back on City’s radar.
It remains to be seen how City’s backline will shape up next season – with all of John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji in line to leave permanently – but Reis would prove to be a valuable addition to Guardiola’s defence for the new campaign.
Why Vitor Reis already looks like a Pep Guardiola centre-back
The Manchester City star has clocked 2,477 minutes in 27 La Liga outings for Girona this term, earning huge plaudits for his eye-catching displays under Michel.
Guardiola has previously spoken very highly of Reis from his brief time working with the young centre-half, who recently earned his first senior Brazil call-up and made his debut for his nation as a substitute in a 3-1 friendly win over Croatia on Tuesday night.
City are planning for a big summer in the transfer window and with at least a few senior exits likely in defence, Reis is the perfect candidate to return to England and build on a successful season in western Europe.
However, Girona will want to fight to keep hold of their on-loan star for another campaign as they approach the end of Reis’ loan amid a fight to finish in the top half of the La Liga table.
Mundo Deportivo has reported this week, as relayed by Sport Witness, that while there was a strong chance Reis’ stay at Girona could have been extended earlier on in the campaign, that seems to be tall order now given his ‘meteoric rise’ in Spain.
While Girona are expected to put up a fight to keep hold of their on-loan star for the 2026-27 season, Manchester City are expected to take up the option of recalling their Brazilian defender back to England this summer.
Vitor Reis admits willingness to play in midfield for Manchester City
Regardless of where he plays his club football next season, Reis will spend some part of pre-season in Manchester as a firm decision on his immediate future is taken by club executives in conjunction with his camp.
Reis has the talent and now the experience to test his talents in the Premier League and with City expecting a mass exodus in defence this summer, the 20-year-old is highly likely to be part of Manchester City’s first-team squad next season.
