Tributes have poured in from the Manchester City first-team squad after the tragic passing of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in a car accident in Spain on Thursday.

The accident reportedly occurred at around 00:30 local time in Zamora – near the border between Spain and Portugal – when the Portuguese brothers’ car left the road following a tyre blowout, before the vehicle then caught fire.

Liverpool have released a statement since the incident, which comes two weeks on from Jota’s wedding to his long-term partner and mother to their three children.

Fans have gathered around Anfield on Thursday to pay their respects and offer their condolences to the friends and family of the footballer.

UEFA will also hold a minute’s silence in the build-up to Thursday’s UEFA European Championship Women’s tie between Spain and Portugal to pay tribute to Jota and his brother, who have been remembered by the world of sport and beyond since their passing.

As the world pays its respects, among those are Manchester City’s first-team squad, who have been sending messages of love and issuing tributes to their footballing colleague on social media.

Perhaps the most personal tribute came from Manchester City vice-captain and Diogo Jota’s Portugal international teammate Ruben Dias, who wrote on social media, “I still can’t believe it. You won your first Premier League, we won Nations League together, you married.

“It doesn’t make any sense. We won’t forget you; the man… the father… the brother… the son and the tireless and talented companion you have always been on the field. May you both rest in peace.”

Fellow national team attacker Bernardo Silva also shared a touching photograph of himself arm in arm with Jota, alongside the caption, “Forever with us” and a heart emoji.

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson wrote, “Futebol está de luto. Descanse em Paz Jota. Viva mais, tenha menos ódio a vida é muito rápida!” which in English translates to, “Football is in mourning . Rest in Peace Jota. Live more, have less hate. Life is too fast!”.

Josko Gvardiol also shared a photo of Jota accompanied with a white heart emoji, while John Stones took to Instagram to offer his condolences with an image of the late Liverpool forward with white heart and dove emojis.

Manuel Akanji offered a similar message with the words, “Way too early” on his personal Instagram story, while Nathan Ake paid tribute to Jota, and City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan commented, “Rest in peace Diogo”.

Elsewhere, there was an Instagram story upload from Rico Lewis, Vitor Reis, Oscar Bobb, Tijjani Reijnders, Jeremy Doku, Kalvin Phillips, and Savinho offering their respects.

Jack Grealish said, “Honestly lost for words. So heartbreaking, my thoughts go out to his whole family. The worst news. RIP Diogo and Andre,” while attacking teammate Rayan Cherki said, “Rest in peace”, and Phil Foden wrote, “Rest in peace. My thoughts are with the family.”

City striker Erling Haaland also uploaded a photo of the late Liverpool star with the words, “RIP Diogo. Way too early”, while compatriot Matheus Nunes said, “Much strength to the family and may they both rest in peace”.
