Manchester City have confirmed the club are considering legal action against Enrique Riquelme after the Real Madrid presidential candidate claimed the Spanish side were set to sign Erling Haaland if he wins the election.
Riquelme claimed on El Hormiguero that he had a deal in place with the Norwegian striker, should he beat current president Florentino Perez in the club's upcoming election on June 7th.
City have categorically denied the claims and have threatened legal action over the use of Haaland's image for Riquelme's advantage.
“The stories which have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are untrue,"a club statement said.
“There is no chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it. We are considering legal action for the use of our player image in this context.”
Haaland's agent, Rafaela Pimenta, and father, Alfie Haaland, also released a joint statement to confirm the reports from Spain were untrue.
"All very entertaining but not true. We wish all the best for both candidates in the Madrid elections.”
Haaland is contracted at the Etihad until 2034 after signing a lucrative long-term deal in January 2025. The 25-year-old has scored 162 goals in 198 games for the Cityzens across all competitions and won a third careerPremier League Golden Boot in 2025/26.
