Manchester City and England forward Jack Grealish has confirmed that his season is over after undergoing surgery on a foot stress fracture.

The 30-year-old joined Everton on a season-long loan last summer in an attempt to revitalise his club career in the backdrop of frustrating campaigns at the Etihad Stadium wherein he did not play regularly under Pep Guardiola.

Grealish became Manchester City’s record signing in 2021 when he left boyhood club Aston Villa for £100 million, winning three Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League honour en route to a historic treble in 2023, amongst a plethora of success with the Blues.

However, the Birmingham-born star struggled for a regular look-in at the Etihad Stadium in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns – which saw him swap Manchester City for Everton last summer as he looked to force his way back into the England setup under Thomas Tuchel ahead of the FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Grealish made a strong start to life in Merseyside and was voted the Premier League Player of the Month for August, supplying a series of assists in his first set of league appearances for the Toffees under David Moyes.

Manchester City are covering one-fourth of Grealish’s wages at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Everton paying three-fourths of the winger’s salary, which is believed to be around £300,000-per-week.

Everton have an option to sign Grealish on a permanent deal for £50 million at the end of his loan, though the attacker’s recent foot stress injury and subsequent injury will certainly force a re-think among club executives over the financial repercussions of such an arrangement.

Grealish suffered the injury setback in Everton’s 1-0 win away at Aston Villa on January 18, having failed to play since and causing great worry among the club fanbase over potentially not kicking a ball again this season.

Everton fans’ worst fears have been realised following an announcement from Grealish on his official Instagram account, confirming that he has undergone surgery and is unlikely to play again this season.

“Didn’t want the season to end like this but that’s football, gutted. Surgery done and now all focus on getting back fit. I know for sure I will come back fitter, stronger and better than before,” the statement read.

“The support I’ve had since coming to this unbelievable club has meant the world to me. The staff, my teammates and especially the fans have been incredible and I absolutely love representing this club.

“I’ll be backing the lads all the way and doing everything I can to get back as soon as possible. Thank you again for all the love, it means so much.”
