Manchester City midfielder Rodri (29) has admitted he would not rule out a future move to Real Madrid, despite his past with city rivals Atletico.
The 29-year-old, who joined City from Atletico in 2019, is out of contract next summer and says he expects talks with the Premier League champions over his future.
“I need to sit down and talk,” Rodri told Spanish media, transcribed by BBC Sport, while also admitting he would “like to come back” to Spain at some stage.
Rodri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, played 47 times for Atletico but believes that should not prevent him from considering a switch to the Bernabeu.
“There have been many players who’ve gone down that path,” he said. “Not immediately, but over time. For me, you can’t turn down the best clubs in the world.”
Rodri has become one of Pep Guardiola’s most influential players, winning 12 major trophies including four Premier League titles and the Champions League.
He has returned to action this season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in 2024 and has made 28 appearances in all competitions.
Asked about Real president Florentino Perez’s reported admiration, Rodri added: “They don’t talk to me directly. They’d talk to my agent.”
Rodri has also been named in Spain’s squad for friendlies against Serbia and Egypt as he targets a place at this summer’s World Cup.
