Spain captain and Manchester City star Rodri has admitted that he may one day play for Real Madrid.
The 29-year-old midfielder made the revelation during an interview with Radioestadio Noche on Wednesday while on international duty.
Speaking from Spain’s training base, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner addressed growing speculation regarding a return to his hometown this summer.
Despite his previous four-year spell with rivals Atlético Madrid, Rodri insisted that the “best clubs in the world” cannot be ignored.
The timing of these comments is particularly significant as Rodri enters the final eighteen months of his contract.
His current deal at the Etihad Stadium expires in June 2027, and formal extension talks have yet to progress.
As per Onda Cero, the midfielder believes it is natural to assess his future as he reaches his peak years.
Real Madrid are reportedly searching for a long-term midfield metronome following the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić.
Rodri’s tactical intelligence makes him the ideal candidate to lead a new-look Madrid engine room.
Rodri’s 2025-26 season has been a story of patient rehabilitation following a devastating cruciate ligament injury.
The Spaniard used his time away from the pitch to mentally and physically “recharge” after years of relentless competition.
He opted for a strategic break in late 2025 to ensure he reached peak fitness for the season’s decisive final stretch.
According to Onda Cero, Rodri now feels he has returned to his world-class best just in time for the Champions League quarter-finals.
His recovery coincides with his new role as captain of the Spanish national team. Rodri is set to lead La Roja into the 2026 World Cup this summer as one of the tournament favourites.
He praised manager Luis de la Fuente for fostering a squad that treats every fixture like a final.
Interestingly, he also addressed the potential of a “double pivot” partnership with Arsenal’s Martín Zubimendi.
Rodri noted that Spain previously won the World Cup using two defensive midfielders, hinting at a tactical shift for the summer.
The midfielder also took the opportunity to dispel rumours of a rift with Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior.
The two stars were famously pitted against each other during the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony, which Rodri ultimately won.
However, the City star insisted he holds “deep admiration” for the Brazilian international’s incredible talent.
If a move to Madrid materialises this July, the two former rivals could remarkably find themselves teammates at Santiago Bernabeú.
For now, Rodri’s immediate priority remains securing a historic treble with Manchester City.
