Manchester United and Chelsea made it through to the final of the League Cup with wins over Arsenal and Manchester City respectively.

Elisabeth Terland’s cool finish after Arsenal keeper Anneke Borbe gave the ball away at the end of the first half was the difference between Man Utd and Arsenal.

Arsenal came out fighting in the second half, but were unable to find an equaliser. Their problems were compounded when Olivia Smith received a second yellow card an hour into the match for a late challenge on Julia Zigiotti.

It did not take long for the action to start in the match, with Frida Manuum having a golden opportunity to put Arsenal ahead within the first minute. Her free header from just outside the six-yard box was goalbound if not for a fantastic save from Phallon Tullis-Joyce low down to her left.

Arsenal’s early dominance continued, and ten minutes later Manuum again missed a brilliant chance to give her side the lead. This time the ball fell to her four yards from goal, on the volley with only the keeper to beat, but the midfielder fired well over the bar

Against the run of play, Manchester United thought they had earned the chance to go ahead after 25 minutes when Terland went down in the area under pressure from Katie McCabe. However, the referee waved play on, leaving the Manchester United coaching staff incensed on the touchline.

After the penalty appeal, United grew into the match and they reaped their rewards in injury-time of the first half as Terland put the Manchester side ahead. Arsenal keeper Borbe gave the ball away to Wangerheim before she found her Norwegian teammate, who calmly stroked the ball home.

Arsenal came out for the second half firing as Manuum and Alessia Russo both missed chances early to level the scoring. The biggest opportunity fell to Russo who saw her attempt from six yards out drift agonisingly wide of the post.

Despite the fast start, Arsenal’s troubles mounted on the hour mark when Smith received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Zigiotti after she had cleared the ball away.

Manchester United now have the chance to win a trophy for the first time since 2024, when they beat Tottenham in the FA Cup final.

But they face a tough task against Sonia Bompastor’s Blues, who also won 1-0 against WSL leaders Man City.

Wieke Kaptein headed in from close range just before half-time to secure the win for Chelsea, who will be hoping to win the competition in back-to-back seasons.
