Manchester United want to sign two midfielders this summer and could sign two players who cost upwards of £70m.

An overhaul of the club’s midfield is the priority for the summer transfer window as the Red Devils prepare for the probable return of European football.

Casemiro’s contract is due to expire in the summer, and his exit has been confirmed. Manuel Ugarte is also expected to leave Old Trafford.

United have been linked with a wealth of options in midfield, including Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, Crystal Palace playmaker Adam Wharton, and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.

Each of those players would cost significant sums, but Manchester United journalist Laurie Whitwell has said the signing of two ‘big midfielders’ is possible.

He insisted Champions League football would have a bearing on incomings but believes there is ‘scope’ to sign two high-profile names.

Speaking to The Talk of the Devils podcast, he said:”I think so (the signings will be big). The finances are, as always, tight. The actual cash levels. They will have more flexibility with Champions League, but they can’t write a blank check.

“I think there’s scope for a couple of solid midfielders, a couple of £70M midfielders, something like that.”
