Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has opened up about an “impossible scenario” amid recent reports suggesting he could be headed to Saudi Arabia next year.

Fernandes was the subject of a big-money approach from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal over the summer, with the Riyadh-based club reportedly having offered him a lucrative £200 million contract on top of a £100m transfer fee.

And although United’s skipper rejected the move, it hasn’t stopped speculation surrounding his long-term future at Old Trafford, with rumours linking him to a Saudi switch as early as next summer continuing to swirl since.

Saudi clubs remain willing to offer him a “crazy” salary, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, and Fernandes was pressed on the issue by journalists while on national team duty with Portugal this week.

“I didn’t close the door on moving to Saudi Arabia because of the World Cup,” the Portuguese midfielder insisted when asked about his decision to snub the approach from Al-Hilal.

"That was never in my mind. I wanted to stay at Manchester United, and the club wanted me to stay. That's all there is to it."

Quizzed on continued interest in his services from the Middle East, Fernandes added: "That's an impossible scenario to imagine, because it's nothing that's been discussed with me.

"When it was discussed with me, I spoke openly with you at a press conference before a Nations League match. I like to enjoy the moment, and the most important thing for me now is representing the national team, because it's a source of enormous pride to be able to play [against Ireland on Saturday] - and I still don't know if I'll play, let alone if I'll leave Manchester United in a year.

"I'm happy where I am. Otherwise, I wouldn't have stayed, but it's something that doesn't affect me."

Al-Ittihad, where the likes of Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante now ply their trade, were also reportedly in for Fernandes last summer and could be another potential suitor for him in the Saudi league.

However, according to sources close to the player cited by BBC Sport, the 31-year-old is thought to only be interested in playing in major European leagues. Fernandes is also understood to be “fully committed” to United - where he is under contract until 2027, with the option of an additional year - as things stand.
