Manchester United are confident that the club are leading the race to sign Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Sweden international is a target for Europe’s top clubs after a prolific period in Portuguese football. Gyokeres has 77 goals in 83 appearances for Sporting and thrived under the management of Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim at the Estádio José Alvalade.
Earlier in the campaign, he hit a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City in Lisbon.
Amorim is keen on a reunion with the 26-year-old, as Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee continue to struggle at Old Trafford. On Sunday, Amorim played midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as an auxiliary forward with the duo left out of the side.
Gyokeres is now a top target for the Red Devils and iNews are reporting that United believe they are leading the chase.
Finances for Amorim to invest were restricted in the January window with Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu the only new arrival at Old Trafford. Gyokeres is now set to be prioritised for the summer, as Amorim aims to bring in players who suit his system.
Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Newcastle United have also been linked with the forward, who has a release clause of €100m (£83.4m) in his current contract. However, it is understood that Sporting are prepared to lower their asking price to around £60m for the summer window.
Gyokeres signed for Sporting from Coventry City and the Championship side have a sell-on clause inserted in the deal. The forward has netted 15 times in 26 appearances for Sweden at international level.
