Ruben Amorim will surely be quizzed on the defender’s availability during the week

Manchester United have been given a new injury scare ahead of next week’s trip to Liverpool after England youth star Ayden Heaven picked up a knock on national team duty.

The teenaged defender went down in the opening minute of England’s Under-20s loss to Switzerland at St. George's Park on Friday, requiring lengthy treatment before eventually being substituted by head coach Ben Futcher at half-time.

Heaven playing out the rest of the first half may offer some encouragement that the issue is not severe, with Futcher confirming after the match that the 19-year-old had “picked something up” but that he didn’t think it was “too serious”.

However, the England U20s boss added that the team “will have to see how it settles down”, suggesting the extend of the problem is not yet known.

Heaven, who joined United from Arsenal’s youth set-up earlier this year, stepped up into the Red Devils’ first team at times in the second half of last season but missed two months towards the end of the campaign with a foot injury.

He was then a regular fixture in Ruben Amorim’s three-man backline during pre-season but has struggled for regular gametime since the 2025-26 campaign got properly underway, starting only once - in the Carabao Cup defeat against Grimsby Town - and being handed just three Premier League minutes so far.

The promising young centre-back has featured on the bench in every other league match so far for United, though, suggesting his time could come if more fitness issues were to strike in Amorim’s injury-prone defence.

Should he shake off this latest knock, Heaven will expect to be named in the matchday squad when his side travel to Anfield on Sunday, October 19.

Before that clash, United boss Amorim will face the media and will likely be quizzed on the youngster’s availability.
