Manchester United have emerged as another contender in the battle for Julian Alvarez, adding fresh competition for Barcelona in their pursuit of the Atletico Madrid forward.

According to Marcos Duran, the Premier League side has already made contact with the Argentine’s representatives as they assess a possible move for one of the most sought-after attackers in the market.

Although it is understood that Barcelona have identified Alvarez as a priority target, interest from England and France continues to grow in the Argentine.

Manchester United make move for Alvarez

Barcelona’s interest in Alvarez is well documented, with the Argentine viewed as one of the most complete attacking options currently available.

Marcos Duran reports that Manchester United have now entered the picture after speaking directly with the player’s agent. 

Furthermore, the likes of Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain also remain attentive to the situation surrounding the Atletico Madrid star.

Notably, United’s return to the Champions League, coupled with their financial capacity, gives them an advantage in a market where Barcelona still need to operate carefully.

The journalist suggests that Alvarez’s representatives are exploring multiple avenues in case a move to Barcelona proves difficult to complete, with Manchester United positioning themselves as a realistic alternative.

Barcelona remain Alvarez’s preferred destination

Alvarez has already communicated his intention to leave Atletico Madrid and has not altered that stance despite efforts from within the dressing room to convince him to stay.

Meanwhile, even though the Blaugrana value the Argentine, the biggest obstacle remains Atletico Madrid’s position.

The club have little interest in strengthening a direct domestic rival and are reluctant to sanction a sale to Barcelona, even if the player pushes for an exit.

That reluctance could hand an opportunity to Manchester United, who would face far fewer complications in negotiations if Atletico eventually decide to cash in.
